Southern Luv ranks first on all four barbecue searches that matter in Citrus Park — across all 81 points of the grid, ahead of chains with four times the reviews. That work is done. What we found this month is that the site was splitting its own traffic across three versions of the same page. That is now fixed.
southernluvbbq.com · Prepared by Once Once Agency
We measured Southern Luv's actual position on Google Maps from 81 separate locations spread across 49 km² around the Citrus Park store. This is not one person's search result: it is 81 people searching from 81 different corners of Tampa. On bbq tampa and bbq near me, all 81 points return Southern Luv in the top three, with an average position of 1.0 and 1.1.
How to read these maps. Each pin is a search performed from that exact spot on the map, and the number is where Southern Luv appeared. Green with a 1 means first result. "Local Pack" is the share of those points where the business lands in the three-listing block Google shows above the map — the block that captures most of the calls and directions.
Where the one gap is. On brisket tampa, seven of the 81 points drop to positions 2–4, clustered along the southern edge of the grid. That is the band where MISSION BBQ and Jazzy's — both on W Waters Ave, a little over 5 km out — sit physically closer to the searcher than we do. It is not a website problem: it is distance. It gets closed with reviews and service signals in that area, not with changes to the site.
MISSION BBQ has 3,490 reviews. 4 Rivers Smokehouse has 2,620. Southern Luv has 860 and still places ahead of both on the map. The difference is the rating — 4.8 against 4.6 and 4.4 — and genuine proximity to the person searching.
Collac RankMaps · 9×9 grid, 49 km²
| Business | Avg. position | Local Pack | Reviews | Rating | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Luv BBQ | 1.0 | 100% | 860 | 4.8 | — |
| MISSION BBQ | 2.1 | 99% | 3,490 | 4.6 | 5.7 km |
| Jazzy's BBQ | 3.9 | 47% | 1,838 | 4.3 | 5.4 km |
| Wicked Oak BarbeQue | 4.1 | 27% | 880 | 4.6 | 12.8 km |
| 4 Rivers Smokehouse | 5.9 | 20% | 2,620 | 4.4 | 6.4 km |
| Martin's BBQ Tampa | 6.2 | 6% | 1,545 | 4.3 | 4.8 km |
| Hank's Catfish & BBQ | 6.5 | 0% | 1,964 | 4.3 | 7.8 km |
| Mighty Quinn's Barbeque | 8.8 | 0% | 1,170 | 4.6 | 14.9 km |
4.8 across 860 reviews is the best ratio in the table. No chain on that list matches it, and it is the one thing they cannot buy with a marketing budget. Every new review above 4.8 widens the gap; every one below narrows it faster than it looks, because the average barely moves but the algorithm weighs recent momentum.
On bbq near me there are 124 businesses competing within 5 km and 18 within 1 km, because Google mixes barbecue with general restaurants, dessert shops and Asian food. Holding an average position of 1.1 in that context is the strongest number in this report.
Search Console was reporting the homepage as three separate URLs, and all three were receiving traffic independently. Google was not treating them as the same page: it assigned each a different average position — 6.2, 9.2 and 21.0 — and split between them the authority that should concentrate on one.
Search Console · August 10 – 31, 2026
What was happening. The www version returned 200 instead of redirecting to the root domain. The canonical tag was correctly set and pointed at the non-www version, but a canonical is a recommendation, not an instruction: while the other URL keeps answering 200, Google is free to keep indexing it. And it was in fact the version pulling most of the traffic — 502 of 713 clicks — despite being the one we were asking it to ignore.
Fixed. We added a permanent 301 redirect from www to the root domain, preserving path and query parameters. Verified against production:
Live requests against production
| Request | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
www.southernluvbbq.com/ | 200 | 301 → root |
www.southernluvbbq.com/menu/ | 200 | 301 → root |
www…/luv-news/?utm_source=test | 200 | 301, query intact |
/tampa-southern-luv-bbq-food-menu | 2 hops | 1 hop |
/davie · /tampa · /news | 2 hops | 1 hop |
When the effect shows up. Google needs to re-crawl the www URLs and process the 301 before it merges the signals. On a site this size that typically takes two to six weeks. Next month's report should show the homepage as a single URL, with the clicks combined and a better average position than any of the three had separately.
The Search Console property began recording data on August 10, 2026. July returns zero across every metric, and pulling the full March-to-August range gives totals identical to August alone. We are stating this plainly because it shapes what this report can and cannot claim.
Search Console · August 10 – 31, 2026 (22 days with data)
822 clicks and 20,800 impressions over 22 days, at a 3.9% CTR and average position 8.4. That works out to 37 clicks and 945 impressions per day. The strongest day was August 22 with 52 clicks; the weakest, August 30 with 11.
That August grew or fell against July. There is no July data in Search Console. Ubersuggest estimates a drop from 349 to 250 keywords between the two months, but we cannot verify it, and Ubersuggest's most recent month is usually incomplete. We are leaving it flagged for next month's report, which will have two full months to compare.
This resolves itself from September onward. With August and September both complete in Search Console, next month's report will be the first with a real, verifiable month-over-month comparison.
Branded searches generate 257 of the month's 822 clicks — nearly a third — at positions between 1.2 and 2.9. People searching "southern luv bbq" find the site and click through. The other half of the story is the high-volume generic terms, where there is room to grow.
Search Console · August 10 – 31, 2026
| Query | Clicks | Impressions | CTR | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| southern luv bbq | 186 | 547 | 34.0% | 1.8 |
| southern love bbq | 52 | 127 | 40.9% | 2.8 |
| bbq near me | 41 | 2,760 | 1.5% | 7.2 |
| food near me | 19 | 943 | 2.0% | 8.4 |

| best bbq tampa | 18 | 223 | 8.1% | 4.5 |
The apparent contradiction between the map and the site. On bbq near me the map gives us position 1.1 and Search Console gives us 7.2. They do not contradict each other — they measure different things. The map measures the Google Business listing, the block with three listings and a map, and there we are first. Search Console measures the blue links underneath, where we compete against Yelp, TripAdvisor and directory sites. 2,760 impressions and 41 clicks on that term is exactly the gap to work: the listing already wins, the page does not.
The Davie page went live in August as a Coming Soon placeholder — no menu, no hours, no operating store. In 22 days it accumulated 97 impressions and 21 clicks: a 21.6% CTR at position 3.3. That is the best ratio on the entire site, five times the average.
What this tells us about the opening. There is demand searching for barbecue in Davie before the offer even exists, and a minimal page already captures it. Once the store opens and the page carries a menu, hours, photos and a verified Google Business listing, that 21.6% applies to a far larger volume of impressions. The listing should be created and verified before opening day, not on it.
The Astro site on Cloudflare performs very well on desktop: 1.2 s to load the main content and virtually zero layout shift. On mobile, PageSpeed's lab test reports 5.3 s — but the real-user data tells a different story.
PageSpeed Insights · lab data
| Metric | Desktop | Mobile | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP · main content loaded | 1.2 s | 5.3 s | < 2.5 s |
| CLS · visual stability | 0.006 | 0.038 | < 0.1 |
| TBT · interaction blocking | 32 ms | 124 ms | < 200 ms |
| FCP · first content visible | 1.0 s | 3.7 s | < 1.8 s |
Why we are not sounding the alarm over 5.3 s. PageSpeed simulates a low-end phone on a slow network: it is a deliberately harsh test. The field data in Search Console's Core Web Vitals — actual Southern Luv customers, on their own phones and connections — marks all 12 mobile URLs as "Good". What people actually experience is fine.
An assumption of ours that turned out to be wrong. When we found the three-URL problem, we assumed the www redirect would also clear the 630 ms PageSpeed charges for "Redirects". We measured after deploying and it did not move. The cause is different: PageSpeed audits the bare domain, which enters over http and hops to https. Cloudflare handles that hop at the edge, and the www rule never touches it.
The right fix was HSTS. We added the Strict-Transport-Security header, which tells the browser to go straight to https next time instead of taking the hop. It is live in production. An honest caveat: on the very first visit from a browser that has never seen the site, the hop still happens — so PageSpeed will keep reporting those 630 ms, because its test always starts from a clean slate. Removing it for first-time visitors as well requires submitting the domain to the HSTS preload list, a separate process that is slow to reverse. That is a decision to make, not an automatic next step.
August was the highest-volume development month of the year. The migration of the site to Astro on Cloudflare, listed as pending in the July report, was completed and is live with 30 URLs in the sitemap.

301 redirect from www to the root domain · the nine legacy redirects cut from two hops to one · HSTS header added · and the review count in the structured markup corrected from 806 to 860, the verified figure.
Verified in production. The legacy URL redirects work, and now in a single hop: /tampa-southern-luv-bbq-food-menu lands on /menu/, and /davie and /tampa on their location pages. They are still receiving impressions on Google, which confirms August's transition happened without losing rankings.
The highest-return fix is already deployed. What remains is three fronts, in order of impact.
Deployed and verified. What remains is watching Search Console merge the three URLs; that is a matter of weeks, not additional work.
bbq near me leaves 2,760 impressions on the table with only 41 clicks, because the Google listing wins but the page does not compete in the blue links. Work the menu page and the Tampa location page for that set of generic terms, which is where the volume sits.
At 21.6% CTR while still in Coming Soon, Davie's Google Business listing should be created and verified before the doors open. Verification requires physical proof — photos of the signage and video of the location — so it is worth starting with margin.
4.8 across 860 reviews is what puts us ahead of chains with 3,490. It is the least copyable advantage and the one that erodes fastest if left unfed. Keep the systematic review request after service.
And a measurement we did not have until now. The four rankmaps in this report are the first photograph of Tampa's local map. From here they repeat every month on the same grid, so next month's report can show real movement point by point, not just a still frame.
